We hope to organise a smooth (and interesting) workshop. Therefore we ask you to have a look at this page and prepare the best as possible. Also, please fill in this preworkshop survey, providing us with valuable info we need for the organisation of the Croment workshop.

prerequisites

Create an account on GBIF & iNaturalist

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility(GBIF) will be the main focus of this workshop. Therefore it is highly recommended to create your own account.

INaturalist will be needed for the Croment Bioblitz. Therefore it is highly recommended to create your own account.

For Openrefine exercises

This workshop assumes you have current versions of the following installed on your computer:

  1. The Openrefine software.

For SQL exercises

SQLite is a C-language library that implements a small, fast, self-contained, high-reliability, full-featured, SQL database engine. SQLite is the most used database engine in the world. SQLite is built into all mobile phones and most computers and comes bundled inside countless other applications that people use every day.

DB Browser for SQLite (DB4S) is a high quality, visual, open source tool to create, design, and edit database files compatible with SQLite.

This workshop assumes you have a recent version of one of the following software installed on your computer:

  1. SQLite as command line interface(CLI)
  2. DB Browser for SQLite, a full GUI application

For R exercises (optional)

R is a programming language for statistical computing and data visualization. Created by statisticians Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman, R has been adopted in the fields of data mining, bioinformatics, and data analysis. This workshop assumes you have recent version of the following installed on your computer:

  1. The R software itself, and
  2. RStudio Desktop.

Git (optional)

Git is a distributed version control system that tracks changes in any set of computer files, usually used for coordinating work among programmers who are collaboratively developing source code during software development. Its goals include speed, data integrity, and support for distributed, non-linear workflows (thousands of parallel branches running on different computers)

This workshop recommends you have current versions of the following installed on your computer:

  1. The Git software.
  2. Github account Github
  3. Github desktop Github_desktop

QGIS (optional)

Quantum GIS (QGIS) a Free and Open Source Geographic Information System to Create, edit, visualise, analyse and publish geospatial information. QGIS is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, BSD and mobile devices.

  1. Qgis
